Kongehøj - gravhøj tæt ved Hærvejen

Kongehøjen - or Kongshøj - is a sizable burial mound close to the Ancient Road's hiking and cycling route.  

The burial mound Kongehøj is located at a driveway to private property. However, the mound is so large that it can be clearly seen from the Army Route on Øster Skibelundvej. The mound is protected and has not been excavated. Therefore, there is no closer dating than antiquity in general. In some contexts, the mound is called Kongshøj. 

Kongehøj has relatively steep sides, as previous cultivators have ploughed close to the foundation of the burial mound. The mound is about 4 m high and 25 m in diameter, and has a flat top. 

The very old Hærvej may also have passed by here. Traffic from the north had to pass the river Kongeå shortly after Vejen, and the natural valley down Øster Skibelundvej may have been one of the routes. The burial mound has therefore been able to function as a lighthouse on land and be a signpost for the Hærvej travellers of the time.
